Westhills Elementary fifth graders master camping skills

BESSEMER, Ala. — Fifth-grade students at Westhills Elementary traded their pencils for tent poles Feb. 16 as they practiced essential outdoor survival and teamwork skills. Under the guidance of Cub Scout leader Phillis Brown, the students participated in a hands-on workshop focused on assembling camping tents. The activity was designed to equip the scholars for a successful camping experience while reinforcing the importance of clear communication and collective problem-solving.

The session allowed students to move beyond the traditional classroom setting to develop practical life skills. As they worked in small groups to secure rainflies and connect fiberglass poles, the fifth graders practiced delegating tasks and supporting their peers to reach a common goal.

"Learning life skills, building confidence, and working together—one pole at a time," school officials noted in a statement following the exercise. Administrators emphasized that these collaborative experiences are vital for building student confidence. By mastering a technical task like tent assembly, students gain a sense of independence and preparedness that translates back into their academic and social lives.

By recognizing those who "showed up ready to shine," Westhills Elementary continues to reinforce the importance of its ROAR values, ensuring that academic success is paired with strong personal character.
